Kramer Ketogenic Diet

About

Jenny Kramer MS, RD

I have been a Registered Dietitian (RD) for 15 years and for 10 of those years I have specialized in ketogenic diet as a therapy for epilepsy in children and adults at Indiana University Health. I became a dietitian because I wanted to help people enjoy food but use the power of food to heal or manage diseases. I have seen such a profound impact from use of ketogenic diet in epilepsy that I would like to offer this service outside of a hospital setting and to treat more disorders besides epilepsy. In addition to ketogenic diet, I have worked with children with feeding disorders including use of blenderized feedings via G tube. I previously was a Certified Diabetes Educator and worked with pediatrics, adolescence, and adults with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes as well as prediabetes. I received my Bachelor of Science degree in dietetics from Indiana State University and my Master of Science degree in clinical nutrition from University of Kentucky.

Programs

Ketogenic Diet is a medical nutrition therapy that should be closely monitored by a knowledgeable dietitian in conjunction with a physician or other medical provider. Baseline labs are required prior to initiation of the diet as well as a release of liability waiver. Ketogenic diet counseling will be conducted only once appropriate lab tests have been completed and reviewed by dietitian.
Ketogenic Diet therapy includes a spectrum of dietary approaches – classic ketogenic diet, modified Atkins diet, medium chain triglyceride diet, and low glycemic index treatment. Ketogenic diet should be individualized; the most appropriate form of the ketoenic diet will be determined based on your medical and personal needs.

FAQ's

What is ketogenic diet?
Ketogenic diet is a way of eating that changes the body’s fuel source from glucose to ketones. This is done by strictly limiting carbohydrate (sugar) intake and increasing fat intake. Ketones are produced from the breakdown of fat.

Why do this?
30-40% of people with epilepsy are not controlled with anti-seizure medications alone. In addition, sometimes seizures are controlled but with medication side effects. The ketogenic diet is a well-studied nutrition therapy that has been used since the 1920s. Studies show that the ketogenic diet can improve seizure control in about 50% of children and adults that try the diet. In addition to use in treating epilepsy, ketogenic diet may be beneficial in the treatment of autism, migraines, and obesity related illnesses including hypertension, insulin resistance, and Type 2 Diabetes.

How can I start this?
This is a medical treatment that should not be started alone. Ketogenic diet therapy should be closely monitored by a knowledgeable dietitian and your physician. Baseline lab work should be done before starting the diet and every 3 months while on the diet. Like most treatments, there is a risk of side effects including dehydration, constipation, acidosis, and sometimes kidney stones. Pancreatitis, decreased bone density, and slowed growth have also been reported. This is why it is very important that a knowledgeable medical team is involved with anyone on a ketogenic diet as they can help prevent and manage side effects along with providing guidance to optimize success.
